Recent measurements suggest that approximately one million years ago, an explosion propelled Zeta Ophiuchi at a staggering speed of about 160,000 kilometers per hour, completely obliterating its companion star in the process.
Thanks to a new simulation created by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, we can now uncover more details about the history of this runaway star. The combined image reveals a shockwave, depicted in red and green, formed by material blown off the surface of the star colliding with interstellar gas along its path. Surrounding the star, a bubble of X-ray radiation, indicated in blue, testifies to the gas heated to temperatures of millions of degrees by the shockwave.
To better understand these observations, a team of astronomers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Study in Ireland undertook the task of creating the first comprehensive computer simulation of a shockwave. This simulation aimed to verify how well the models aligned with X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wave observations.
Interestingly, the computer models yielded some unexpected findings that differed from what astronomers had observed. All three simulations indicated X-rays that were weaker than what was actually observed. The brightest X-ray emission was expected to be near the star, while two of the three computer models suggested that the X-ray radiation should be brighter near the shockwave.
In the future, scientists plan to refine their models by incorporating additional physics, such as the effects of turbulence and particle acceleration. They are eager to see if these advancements will improve the alignment between the simulations and the X-ray data.
