The Striking Technicolor Wonder: Unveiling the Tiny Bird’s Iridescent Jigsaw

The pin-tailed manakin (Ilicura militaris) is a small bird endemic to the eastern coast of Brazil. It is only 12.5 cm (4.9 in) long, and the male is highly distinctive with its bright red forehead and rump.

The female is mostly olive green, but the juvenile male looks very much like its female counterpart.

The pin-tailed manakin is a frugivore, but it has been known to eat small insects from time to time. During the breeding season, the male establishes a display area called a lek, where he puts on a show for any potential mates.

He will jump back and forth over the female, sometimes making a snapping noise in the air, and fluffing out his vibrant red rump with his chin down when he lands facing her.
