In a stunning display of maternal instinct, a gazelle mother fought off a martial eagle, Africa’s largest eagle, in an attempt to save her calf.
The incredible encounter was captured on video by a tour guide at Mara Plains Camp in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
The guide, who was leading a group of tourists on a game drive, spotted the eagle diving towards the ground at high speed. The eagle’s target was initially obscured from view, but as it landed, the tourists saw that it had captured a young gazelle calf.
The eagle quickly secured the calf in its talons and took flight. However, the gazelle mother was determined to save her
baby. She charged after the eagle, kicking and striking it with her hooves.
For a brief moment, the gazelle mother seemed to be winning. She managed to knock the eagle off course, forcing it to drop the calf to the ground.
But the eagle was not to be deterred. It quickly recovered and returned to the calf, this time snatching it up in its talons and carrying it away.
The gazelle mother watched helplessly as her calf was carried off. She knew that she could not defeat the eagle, but she had put up a brave fight.
Martial eagles are powerful predators that prey on a variety of animals, including gazelles, monkeys, and large birds. They are listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
