The houses of Skara Brae, built with closely-fitting flat stone slabs and surrounded by mounds of household refuse, contain stone furniture such as dressers and box-beds, providing insights into domestic arrangements and daily activities. While the exact reasons for the end of village life at Skara Brae remain uncertain, its decline coincided with the rise of new monuments on mainland Orkney.
